This is a recording of our 30 minute 6th grade band synchronous instruction during 100% remote instruction. We incorporate methods to include group/solo playing and culture/community building across multiple school buildings in a remote learning setting, which can be challenging for performance based music courses. For the playing component, we use the Essential Elements Interactive program, which is provided at no additional cost with our Essential Elements method book. We also allow for students to unmute and perform a solo of their choosing for the class. For the culture/community building, we play several quick games to help students get to know each other and have some fun (student name anagrams, name 3 in 5, etc.) We also review expectations for the Google Meet setting at the beginning (review is cut off in the beginning, but the opening slide is visible) to encourage a positive learning culture. This is particularly important for us, as we’re combining four different elementary schools for these synchronous learning sessions. This recording is particularly useful for instrumental and vocal music teachers who seek to maximize their synchronous remote learning experiences for their students, but could be useful for all teachers in all content areas who are looking for ways to structure their synchronous remote learning sessions.~Mitchell and Scott
